Na een intensieve training of wedstrijd zit het lichaam in een katabole, spierafbrekende toestand. Een goede Post workout formule zorgt ervoor dat je zo snel mogelijk uit die toestand komt en dat je spieren optimaal herstellen.
Er bestaan drie soorten Post workout supplementen om de katabole toestand snel te stoppen.
- Alleen Koolhydraten
- Alleen Aminozuren
- Post workout blend
Door direct na je training of wedstrijd zeer snel opneembare koolhydraten te nemen geef je het lichaam directe energie. Het lichaam heeft dan meteen geen reden meer om spiereiwit af te breken. Dus, direct koolhydraten nemen na je activiteit is een hele goede manier om snel uit de katabole toestand te komen. Hoewel snelle koolhydraten zorgen voor het stoppen van de katabole toestand, zorgen ze niet voor herstel en opbouw van spieren.
Een andere Post workout optie is het nemen van losse aminozuren. Losse aminozuren worden zeer snel opgenomen in de bloedbaan, waardoor het lichaam eerder deze zal gebruiken als energiebron en je spiereiwit met rust laat. Dit is ook een manier om uit de katabole toestand te komen. Echter niet zo efficient als het nemen van koolhydraten, of zoals je hieronder kunt lezen, de post workout blend. Losse aminozuren worden vooral ingezet als extra middel net voor een training, na een training en als tussendoortje op de gangbare voeding en suppletie. Eigenlijk is het een luxe product.
Een Post workout blend bestaat uit een combinatie van snel opneembare koolhydraten en eiwitten. Hoe sneller de koolhydraten en eiwitten opgenomen kunnen worden door het lichaam, hoe beter. Een goede Post workout formule bevat in ieder geval één of meerdere van de volgende basis ingrediënten:

Koolhydraten
- Waxy maize starch
- Maltodextrine
- Dextrose
Overige ‘extra’ ingrediënten zijn mooi meegenomen, maar niet noodzakelijk voor de basiswerking van een goede Post workout formule.
